Anyone who has talked astrology with me over the past five years knows my great affection for the decans: an ancient system of dividing the zodiac from 12 signs into 36: allowing more specific archetypal energies to be identified within (but still woven into) the fabric of the whole.
Have you ever known two Taureans who are somewhat similar, but also very notably different? This is because the spread of the essence is actually pretty wide when it comes to a chart in astrology… and each sign evolves as the cycle progresses. They mature like we do: each decan encompassing a stage of development contained within the sign.
While this could make naming rightfully complex, for simplicity I use the traditional name of the sign followed by a I, II, III. This allows us to remain focused on the integrity of each flavor (and life lesson) while also exploring the full depth of each one. However, I have identified some useful keywords and phrases for reflection. These are intended to help reveal their full potency based upon my personal experience and years of listening to the stories of souls coming to me for council.
While their popularity has increased over the past few years, it was Austin Coppock’s book 36 Faces published in 2014 that really brought the practice back into the mainstream astrology community. While it’s out of print and he’s been promising a revised version for years now, I hold my own copy tight — broken binding and all from so much use — accrediting him for my understanding of this zodiacal system that changed both my life and my practice.
As I have explored the influence of each 10° segment of the zodiac’s wheel, I’ve felt the full potency of each decan. I’ve also inspected the transition between each one: how it’s possible to slide between each moment of the story so it all comes together for us to embody (and become wiser) over and over and over.
They are a lot of fun! And really potent within my chart readings as well as my own personal evolution. It’s also no secret that I’m a designer by profession: and when I see an opportunity to whip up a learning tool that has the potential to unlock insights, I’m going to put in the work so that it can help as many people as possible.

Between the eclipse cycle, nodes changing signs and some of the very slow moving outer planets changing signs this year: the decan graphics shown here are the vibes (and story points) that I recommend you make your best friends as we collectively navigate some very challenging times.
